The International Baccalaureate Organisation
The International School of Dublin offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate. It is intended that the school will expand and develop to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP) in the future.
The IBO (www.ibo.org) is a private, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of international education. It offers a complete curriculum for ages 3-19. The programme begins chronologically with the Primary Years Programme (PYP), for children aged 3-12 years. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed as a five-year programme for students aged 11-16. Finally the Diploma Programme (IBDP) is an internationally recognised curriculum and assessment instrument for students aged 16-19, in the two years preceding university entrance. Graduates of the IBDP have, in the past thirty years, gained access to the most prestigious universities in the world.
Although the three IB programmes have their own unique characteristics, the educational philosophy is consistent throughout all three. They place strong emphasis on developing “internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world”. This is articulated in the IB learner profile. IB learners strive to be:
- Communicators
- Thinkers
- Inquirers
- Risk-takers
- Knowledgeable
- Principled
- Caring
- Open-minded
- Well-balanced
- Reflective
The ISD is currently a candidate school for the PYP and will proceed to apply for authorisation from the IB. The school will also seek accreditation from the Council of International Schools (COIS – www.cois.org). These processes take a number of years, and have already commenced. It is normal practice for new International schools to open with the status of candidates for authorisation. |
